Green Eggs & Ham Breakfast for Transitional Housing Residents

Saturday, March 16, 2019, 8:00 am – 11:00 am

“First Steps for Families” in San Mateo

LifeMoves logoLeadership Alumni and Volunteers are gathering at the Life Moves Transitional Housing Apartments in San Mateo to host a breakfast for the families who live there.

Volunteers are needed to set-up and serve the breakfast at the shelter. As there is not a kitchen facility at the shelter to prepare the food on site, food must be prepared in advance and brought to the shelter at the time of service. For those who are unable to volunteer, we are also asking for cash donations to purchase the food and supplies for the morning meal as well as supplies for a craft project for the complex’s children. If donations exceed expenses, the remaining funds will be given to LifeMoves on behalf of Leadership Alumni.

In addition to serving a “Green Eggs & Ham” styled breakfast, volunteer youth (age 10 +) who are family members of Leadership Alumni, are welcome to participate and interact with the children at the apartment complex. This can include leading a craft project for St. Patrick’s Day, or for Green Eggs & Ham Day. The morning will include a reading of this epic tale of Sam and his dislike for Green Eggs & Ham.

If you are able to volunteer to serve breakfast to the families at the LifeMoves shelter in San Mateo, or make food on that morning to bring to the shelter, please contact Deborah Owdom (Leadership Class of 2005) at owdomd@sutterhealth.org, or (650) 696-7661 to register your interest in this Community Service Project. Please indicate what you are willing to do, and if you will be attending on March 16th to help serve the meal. Also, please indicate if you be bringing family members as well. Only 12 to 14 volunteers are needed to serve the meal.  Others are welcome to attend and interact with the families at the shelter.

There are two ways people can make a donation:

  • Send the money to Leadership Program via  PayPal.
  • Send a check payable to Leadership Program, to Margi Power, Leadership Program – Service Day, 1700 S. El Camino Real, Suite 406, San Mateo, CA 94402.

With more than 40 years of service and experience, LifeMoves (formerly Shelter Network) is the largest and most effective nonprofit committed to ending the cycle of homelessness in Silicon Valley.

As a financially-stable and results-driven organization, the LifeMoves mission, since 1987, has been to provide interim housing and supportive services for homeless families and individuals to rapidly return to stable housing and achieve long-term self-sufficiency.

LifeMoves operates nine shelters from Daly City to San Jose, as well as eight other facilities that include permanent supportive housing sites and a drop-in center that provides two meals a day, as well as shower and laundry facilities.  On any given night, we feed, clothe and house approximately 750 people, about one-half of whom are minor children.
