Leadership provides individuals from business, civic and nonprofit sectors with a framework for engagement in the communities of San Mateo, Foster City, Burlingame and Hillsborough.
Leadership is a division of the San Mateo Area Chamber of Commerce.
Your Leadership class provides an excellent opportunity to work with and get to know your peers. You also will meet community leaders from key community sectors during each of your monthly classes.
Leadership gives its graduates a foundation upon which they can build and expand their community involvement, as well as offering opportunities to work with local organizations who need support.
Each year, Leadership participants are surprised by the scale and diversity of the community organizations. Leadership introduces each class to these groups and shows them how they can engage.
Participants in the program develop a knowledge base and establish relationships with community leaders representing numerous sectors and issues – from health and housing to education and economic development. Local public, private and nonprofit leaders create connections between communities and constituents through a rich, cross-sector curriculum. For more than 25 years, the program has developed, engaged, empowered and connected leaders for positive community impact. The Leadership alumni network includes state and local government officials, nonprofit leaders and business executives.

"The Leadership Program was a great way to learn more about my community and to make new connections. It encouraged me to expand my community involvement and explore new opportunities. The networking events are fun events where I can reconnect with my classmates and meet other like-minded community leaders."
Serena Ip, Associate Project Manager, MidPen Housing Corporation
"I was a member of the Leadership Class of 1998 and the introduction to the complexities of the County was invaluable. I knew my community of Foster City, however this experience gave me the education and the confidence to run for City Council and really commit to make a difference. I enjoy the friendships I made and new ones that have formed or been reaffirmed at alumni reunions."
Pam Frisella, Former Foster City Mayor, Foster City Council
"When I applied to the Leadership program, I thought it would be a good way to learn more about my community. But, it was so much more. I made great friends, got to engage with community leaders and found new ways to be involved. Those relationships and connections have been invaluable as I have expanded my community involvement."
John Kevranian, Owner, Nuts for Candy
"The Leadership program is a great way to learn more about the community we live and work in. Through the program I met influential people in many fields and have created business relationships that are still going strong five years later."
